ABOUT YOU.

      • As an intermediate consultant, you hold an undergraduate degree in business administration or a related field and have 3 years of consulting experience with a few good projects under your belt.
      • As a senior consultant, you hold either an undergraduate degree and 10 years of relevant consulting experience OR a graduate degree and 6 years of relevant consulting experience where you led a team of consultants with brio.
      • You are proud of your continuous development efforts and come with additional certificates in human systems, process improvement, change management or related fields.
      • You are fluent in French and English, both spoken and written.
      • You are a Canadian citizen.
      • You hold or can qualify to hold a Government of Canada Secret Clearance.
      • You live within a 500 km radius of the city of Ottawa, where NewLeaf’s head office is located, just in case the client requires occasional on-site work (later in 2021).

Job requirements.

NewLeaf is seeking to fill a Paralegal Assistant position to support investigators in workplace investigations conducted under legislation, policies and codes of conduct. Responsibilities of the legal technician will include:

    • Reading mandates and developing the investigation plan.
    • Managing priorities based on the overall workplan and the respective various investigation plans established.
    • Proactive management of follow-ups with parties, including the preparation of briefing notes for investigators; writing and editing letters and other correspondence with clients.
    • Collecting and recording evidence in electronic files.
    • Conducting legal research (case law and doctrine) through accessible legal databases.
    • Transcription and comparative analysis of interviews with parties.
    • Reviewing presentations and reports, including their translation if required.
    • Proactive coordination of investigators’ schedules for interviews and meetings with parties and clients.
    • Coordination of all administrative aspects related to the creation and maintenance of electronic records for the firm’s investigative mandates.
    • Classifying documents and managing correspondence in accordance with the firm’s established administrative practices.

Desired Candidate profile.

    • Hold a university degree or college diploma in paralegal studies or other studies deemed equivalent by the selection committee.
    • Member of a paralegal association is an asset.
    • Bachelor of Law (or in process of obtaining) is an asset.
    • At least one (1) year of work experience as a legal assistant or legal secretary in a law firm or other organization with a judicial mandate OR at least two (2) years of work experience in Labour Relations or Workplace Investigations.
    • Experience in labour law and federal legislation is an asset.
    • Secret security clearance from the Government of Canada (will be obtained if candidate does not already have clearance).
    • High capacity to autonomously manage schedule and high workload.
    • Rigour, strong sense of organization based on priorities, and attention to detail.
    • Work ethic aligned with a demanding and rewarding work environment.
    • Professional, diplomatic and discreet demeanor.
    • Impeccable communication skills, both oral and written.
    • High attention to detail in the delivery of services and interactions with clients.
    • Ease with teleworking and frequent virtual meetings.
    • Mastery of office software such as Microsoft 365 (SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel), Adobe Acrobat, Zoom.
    • Mastery of legal research software such as Lexis Nexis Quick Law, SOQUIJ, CanLii.

Working arrangements.

    • Indeterminate part-time employment (22.5 hours per week) with the very likely possibility of transitioning to full-time over a period of 4 months.
    • Starting salary of $25 to $35/hour (depending on profile).
    • Flexible hours (depending on firm’s hours): Monday to Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. (may vary depending on candidate’s other obligations).
    • Mandatory teleworking with reimbursement of monthly office expenses incurred.
    • Access to the firm’s internal network, Microsoft 365 suite.
